Have a Lighting Requirement but Don’t Know Where to Start?

Perhaps your architect has mentioned a lighting strategy. An ecologist has raised concerns about external lighting. Or you are planning a renovation and want the lighting to feel right, but have no idea which fittings to choose.

You know you need help with lighting. You just may not know what to ask for.

At Circalume, that is a perfectly good place to begin. You do not need a finished lighting brief or a list of products before getting in touch. The starting point is understanding your project, what you want to achieve and the questions that need answering.

Start with the project, not the light fitting

Lighting decisions often begin with a product a downlight, a wall light or a bollard that looks suitable. But a fitting is only one part of the picture.

For an interior, the conversation might start with how the rooms will be used, the atmosphere you want and how the lighting should adapt throughout the day.

For an external space, it might begin with routes, entrances, neighbouring properties, existing darkness and habitats that need consideration.

For a development, the first question may be what lighting information has been requested by the planning authority and how it relates to the wider project.

Understanding these things helps establish an appropriate design brief before equipment is selected.

When is it worth speaking to a lighting designer?

You can approach Circalume when you are exploring an idea, reviewing existing lighting or responding to a specific project requirement. Common starting points include:

* An architect or planning consultant has asked for specialist lighting input.

* A planning condition refers to a lighting scheme, strategy or assessment.

* An ecological report identifies areas where lighting needs careful consideration.

* You want to improve an interior or outdoor space but are unsure how to approach the lighting.

* You are considering an LED upgrade and want to explore what can be retained, adapted or replaced.

* You have selected fittings but need advice on whether they suit the intended design and controls.

An early conversation gives us an opportunity to understand the requirement and identify the next step. If your project is already underway, tell us where it has reached and what decisions have been made.

What should you bring to an initial enquiry?

A short description of the project is enough to start. Tell us where it is, what you are hoping to achieve and whether there is a deadline.

If available, useful information might include drawings, photographs, the wording of a lighting planning condition, relevant ecological reports or details of the existing lighting.

You do not need to assemble everything before contacting us. We can explain which information is relevant to the proposed scope.

How does the process begin?

The first step is a discussion about your project and the support you are looking for, from there, we can identify the proposed scope of work, the information needed and the intended deliverables. Depending on the brief, those might include lighting layouts, calculations, a written strategy, an assessment, a specification or consultancy advice.

A proposal can then set out the services, fee and scope for your consideration. This gives you a clear understanding of what you are commissioning before the work begins.

Where planning or ecology is involved, the lighting work may also need coordination with your architect, planning consultant or ecologist. The required documentation will depend on the project and the specific request it is not a one-size-fits-all package.

Independent advice, shaped around your project

Circalume is an independent lighting design practice providing design and consultancy services, without product sales.

That allows the conversation to centre on the project, what the lighting needs to do, where it is appropriate and how it can be controlled and maintained.

Our approach brings together the experience of Mike’s more than 35 years in lighting and the knowledge developed during our 25 years running Flairlight. Circalume builds on that background with a focus on thoughtful lighting, planning support, ecological mitigation, sustainability and the circular economy.

You do not need to know all the answers

You may know exactly what you need. Or you may simply have a drawing, a planning condition or a space that is not working as you hoped.

Either is a useful starting point.

If you are an architect, developer, planning consultant, landscape professional or property owner with a lighting question, contact Circalume to discuss your project and the support you may need.
